Sailing in Crete

The island of Crete is split into 4 regions, each one as beautiful as the other, creating the perfect holiday destination in Greece. There are also various small islands scattered around the coast of Crete, though only a few of these are actually inhabited. Crete was first inhabited during the Neolithic Age. It reached its peak during the Minoan period, with the Minoan Civilization flourishing from between 2800 BC to 1400 BC. However, this was then totally wiped out due to the explosion of the volcano on the island of Santorini.

The region of Chania is located on the west side of the island, and it is an extremely beautiful part of Crete that has many interesting places for visitors to enjoy. The old town of Chania is one of the highlights, and the famous lighthouse and harbour are one of the islands main attractions. There are also a number of interesting sights including Venetian, Ottoman and Byzantine monuments. You'll find some great beaches in this part of Crete.

To the east of Chania you will find Rethymno. This is a very mountainous part of Crete with beautiful natural scenery and landscapes. It is the ideal part of the island to visit if you enjoy outdoor activities and sports. The old Venetian harbour of Rethymno is a popular place to visit, and you will also find some of the islands most popular beaches - namely Bali and Panormas, both of which are full of holidaymakers during the summer months.

Continuing east from Rethymno is Heraklion, home to the capital city of the island. In Heraklion you will also find the famous archaeological site which is home to the Minoan palace of Knossos - a place where you can learn a great deal about the history of this magical island. There are lots of other interesting places to visit in Heraklion including the old town and harbour. There are also some great beaches here where you can go swimming.

The region of Lassithi is the easternmost part of the island and is one that is extremely beautiful. The famous Lassithi plateau is a wonderful place to visit and offers a unique experience of Crete. You can also head to the town of Agios Nikolaos or the coastal resort of Elouda which is extremely popular for visitors in the summer months. The island of Spinalonga is also found in Lassithi, and this is a popular attraction for visitors to this part of Crete.
